FreeBSD 7.3/8.0/8.1/8.2/9.0 encrypt.c encrypt_keyid memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD 7.3/8.0/8.1/8.2/9.0 (Operating System) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function encrypt_keyid of the file telnet/libtelnet/encrypt.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in libtelnet/encrypt.c in telnetd in FreeBSD 7.3 through 9.0, MIT Kerberos Version 5 Applications (aka krb5-appl) 1.0.2 and earlier, Heimdal 1.5.1 and earlier, GNU inetutils, and possibly other products allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long encryption key, as exploited in the wild in December 2011.

The weakness was shared 12/23/2011 by NighterMan and BatchDrake (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4862 since 12/19/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/15/2024).

A public exploit has been developed by NighterMan/BatchDrake and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at syndrowm.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68412 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 : krb5 (ELSA-2011-1851)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216031 (VMware ESX 4.x Several Security Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2012-0006)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12276.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (71970), Exploit-DB (18280), Zero-Day.cz (353), Tenable (68412) and SecurityFocus (BID 51182†). The entries VDB-4406, VDB-4545, VDB-5529 and VDB-64249 are related to this item.
