A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD 7.3/8.0/8.1/8.2/9.0 (Operating System) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function encrypt_keyid
of the file telnet/libtelnet/encrypt.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in libtelnet/encrypt.c in telnetd in FreeBSD 7.3 through 9.0, MIT Kerberos Version 5 Applications (aka krb5-appl) 1.0.2 and earlier, Heimdal 1.5.1 and earlier, GNU inetutils, and possibly other products allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long encryption key, as exploited in the wild in December 2011.
The weakness was shared 12/23/2011 by NighterMan and BatchDrake (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4862 since 12/19/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 07/15/2024).
A public exploit has been developed by NighterMan/BatchDrake and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at syndrowm.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68412 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 : krb5 (ELSA-2011-1851)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216031 (VMware ESX 4.x Several Security Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2012-0006)).
