Buffer overflow in the CallHTMLHelp method in the Microsoft Windows Media Services ActiveX control in nskey.dll 4.1.00.3917 in Windows Media Services on Microsoft Windows NT and 2000, and Avaya Media and Message Application servers, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long argument. NOTE: the provenance of this information is unknown; the details are obtained solely from third party information.

The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 11/25/2008 by Jeremy Brown with Brown (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-5232 since 11/24/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3204 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.
