A vulnerability classified as critical was found in xine xine-lib (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function id3v23_interp_frame
of the file demux_qt.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple heap-based buffer overflows in xine-lib 1.1.12, and other versions before 1.1.15, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to (1) a crafted metadata atom size processed by the parse_moov_atom function in demux_qt.c and (2) frame reading in the id3v23_interp_frame function in id3.c. NOTE: as of 20081122, it is possible that vector 1 has not been fixed in 1.1.15.
The bug was discovered 08/15/2008. The weakness was shared 11/25/2008 by Will Drewry with CERT (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5234 since 11/25/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 102 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38803 (FreeBSD : libxine -- multiple vulnerabilities (51d1d428-42f0-11de-ad22-000e35248ad7)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading to version 1 Beta2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44633) and Tenable (38803). The entries 43304, 45213, 45212 and 45211 are related to this item.
