VMware Player up to 2.0.5 resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in VMware Player up to 2.0.5 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in VMware Workstation 5.5.8 and earlier, and 6.0.5 and earlier 6.x versions; VMware Player 1.0.8 and earlier, and 2.0.5 and earlier 2.x versions; VMware Server 1.0.9 and earlier; VMware ESXi 3.5; and VMware ESX 3.0.2 through 3.5 allows guest OS users to have an unknown impact by sending the virtual hardware a request that triggers an arbitrary physical-memory write operation, leading to memory corruption.

The bug was discovered 12/02/2008. The weakness was presented 12/08/2008 by Andrew Honig (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-4917 since 11/03/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62383 (GLSA-201209-25 : VMware Player, Server, Workstation: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116091 (VMware Hosted Products and Patches for ESX Resolve Critical Security Issue and Update bzip2 (VMSA-2008-0019)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47017) and Tenable (62383). See 41601, 41600, 41599 and 41598 for similar entries.
