A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Untrusted search path vulnerability in the Windows Object Packager configuration in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Server 2003 SP2 allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse executable file in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a file with an embedded packaged object, aka "Object Packager Insecure Executable Launching Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 01/10/2012 by Parvez Anwar with Secunia Research as MS12-002 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0009 since 11/09/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1574 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57470 (MS12-002: Vulnerability in Windows Object Packager Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2603381)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.
Applying the patch MS12-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11973.
