The XSS Filter in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0 Beta 2 does not properly handle some HTTP headers that appear after a CRLF sequence in a URI, which allows remote attackers to bypass the XSS protection mechanism and conduct XSS or redirection attacks, as demonstrated by the (1) Location and (2) Set-Cookie HTTP headers. NOTE: the vendor has reportedly stated that the XSS Filter intentionally does not attempt to "address every conceivable XSS attack scenario."

The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was shared 12/12/2008. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-5554. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 282 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
