The ACL handling in rsyslog 3.12.1 to 3.20.0, 4.1.0, and 4.1.1 does not follow $AllowedSender directive, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and spoof log messages or create a large number of spurious messages.
The bug was discovered 12/04/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/16/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at rsyslog.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5617 since 12/16/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35232 (Fedora 9 : rsyslog-3.20.2-2.fc9 (2008-11538)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165638 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2009:001)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
