The CSS parser in Mozilla Firefox 3.x before 3.0.5 and 2.x before 2.0.0.19, Thunderbird 2.x before 2.0.0.19, and SeaMonkey 1.x before 1.1.14 ignores the \0 escaped null character, which might allow remote attackers to bypass protection mechanisms such as sanitization routines.

The weakness was disclosed 12/17/2008 by Jesse Ruderman (moz_bug_r_a4) as Bug 228856 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-5510 since 12/12/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65114 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS : firefox vulnerabilities (USN-717-3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165625 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla (SUSE-SA:2009:002)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability.
