Git up to 1.5.2.0 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Git up to 1.5.2.0 (Versioning Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The web interface in git (gitweb) 1.5.x before 1.5.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters related to (1) git_snapshot and (2) git_object.

The bug was discovered 01/12/2009. The weakness was released 01/13/2009 by S2 Crew with Novell (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-5517 since 12/12/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by S2 Crew and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35330 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : git (git-5892)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175135 (Debian Security Update for Git-core (DSA-1708)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47900), Tenable (35330) and Exploit-DB (11497). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 45970 and 45959.
