Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.26 and 4.x through 6.0, Thunderbird before 3.1.18 and 5.0 through 6.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.4 do not properly enforce the IPv6 literal address syntax, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information by making XMLHttpRequest calls through a proxy and reading the error messages.
The weakness was released 01/31/2012 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2012-02 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3670 since 09/23/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68445 (Oracle Linux 4 : seamonkey (ELSA-2012-0084)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119906 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0079)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.26 or 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
