A vulnerability was found in libpng up to 1.2.10 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function png_check_keyword of the file pngwutil.c. Impacted is integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The png_check_keyword function in pngwutil.c in libpng before 1.0.42, and 1.2.x before 1.2.34, might allow context-dependent attackers to set the value of an arbitrary memory location to zero via vectors involving creation of crafted PNG files with keywords, related to an implicit cast of the \0 character constant to a NULL pointer. NOTE: some sources incorrectly report this as a double free vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 12/18/2008. The weakness was disclosed 01/15/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-5907 since 01/15/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
