Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 9.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 9.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.7 do not properly initialize data for image/vnd.microsoft.icon images, which allows remote attackers to obtain potentially sensitive information by reading a PNG image that was created through conversion from an ICO image.
The weakness was presented 01/31/2012 as MFSA2012-06 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0447 since 01/09/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57785 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (0a9e2b72-4cb7-11e1-9146-14dae9ebcf89)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120400 (Solaris Multiple Vulnerabilities in Thunderbird).
Upgrading to version 10.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
