GStreamer Good Plug-ins up to 0.10.11 qtdemux_parse_samples memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in GStreamer Good Plug-ins up to 0.10.11 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is the function qtdemux_parse_samples. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Array index error in the qtdemux_parse_samples function in gst/qtdemux/qtdemux.c in GStreamer Good Plug-ins (aka gst-plugins-good) 0.10.9 through 0.10.11 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via crafted Sync Sample (aka stss) atom data in a malformed QuickTime media .mov file, related to "mark keyframes."

The bug was discovered 01/22/2009. The weakness was shared 02/02/2009 by Tobias Klein (Website). The advisory is available at gstreamer.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0387 since 02/02/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/27/2019).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35754 (Debian DSA-1729-1 : gst-plugins-bad0.10 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175153 (Debian Security Update for Gst-plugins-bad0.10 (DSA-1729)).

A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12428.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48182) and Tenable (35754). The entries 46256, 46255 and 46213 are related to this item.
