A vulnerability was found in TightVnc 1.3.9 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ClientConnection::CheckBufferSize
of the file ClientConnection.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer signedness errors in (1) UltraVNC 1.0.2 and 1.0.5 and (2) TightVnc 1.3.9 allow remote VNC servers to cause a denial of service (heap corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a large length value in a message, related to the (a) ClientConnection::CheckBufferSize and (b) ClientConnection::CheckFileZipBufferSize functions in ClientConnection.cpp.
The weakness was disclosed 02/04/2009 by Alfredo Ortega with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0388 since 02/02/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by desi in Python and been published 5 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35702 (TightVNC Viewer < 1.3.10 Multiple Integer Overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48466), Tenable (35702) and Exploit-DB (8024).
