A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 up to 9 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown code of the component HTML Layout Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The software constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was presented 02/14/2012 by Stephen Fewer with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MS12-010 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0011 since 11/09/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2393 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57944 (MS12-010: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2647516)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100115 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS12-010)).
Applying the patch MS12-010 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12065.
