Linux Kernel TOMOYO LSM Mount input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (version now known). It has been classified as critical. Affected is some unknown processing of the component TOMOYO LSM Mount. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The tomoyo_mount_acl function in security/tomoyo/mount.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39.2 calls the kern_path function with arguments taken directly from a mount system call, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (OOPS) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a NULL value for the device name.

The weakness was presented 02/28/2012 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2518 since 06/15/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58170 (Ubuntu 11.04 : linux vulnerabilities (USN-1380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ubuntu.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73544), Tenable (58170), SecurityFocus (BID 52202†), OSVDB (79656†) and Secunia (SA47681†). See VDB-60827 for similar entry.
