The clone system call in the Linux kernel 2.6.28 and earlier allows local users to send arbitrary signals to a parent process from an unprivileged child process by launching an additional child process with the CLONE_PARENT flag, and then letting this new process exit.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 02/27/2009 by Chris Evans as Bug 479932 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0028 since 12/15/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1073 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40012 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (kernel-951)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165635 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2009:017)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
