Format string vulnerability in Symantec pcAnywhere before 12.5 SP1 allows local users to read and modify arbitrary memory locations, and cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact, via format string specifiers in the pathname of a remote control file (aka .CHF file).

The weakness was shared 03/18/2009 by Deral Heiland with Layered Defense as SYM09-003 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at securityresponse.symantec.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0538 since 02/12/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35976 (Symantec pcAnywhere CHF File Pathname Format String Denial of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
