Sun JRE/JDK Remote Code Execution

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun JRE and JDK (Programming Language Software) (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Java Plug-in in Java SE Development Kit (JDK) and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12, 11, and 10 allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a trusted applet to run in an older JRE version, which can be used to exploit vulnerabilities in that older version, aka CR 6706490.

The weakness was presented 03/25/2009 by Gregory Fleischer (regenrecht) (Website). The advisory is shared at The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1105 since 03/25/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is available at It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46674 (Mac OS X : Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216026 (VMware ESX 4.0 Update for Multiple Packages (VMSA-2009-0016)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8051.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49458), Tenable (46674), SecurityFocus (BID 34240†), Secunia (SA34496†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1021920†).
