Unspecified vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 SP4, 6 SP1, 6 on Windows XP SP2 and SP3, and 6 on Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a web page that triggers presence of an object in memory that was (1) not properly initialized or (2) deleted, aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was disclosed 04/14/2009 by Ivan Fratric with iSIGHT (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0552 since 02/12/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3445 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36152 (MS09-014: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (963027)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100071 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS09-014)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6962.
