Oracle Database 11g 11.1.0.7 Application Express information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Oracle Database 11g 11.1.0.7 (Database Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Application Express. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the Application Express component in Oracle Database 11.1.0.7 allows remote authenticated users to affect confidentiality, related to APEX. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the April 2009 CPU. Oracle has not commented on reliable researcher claims that this issue allows remote authenticated users to obtain APEX password hashes from the WWV_FLOW_USERS table via a SELECT statement.

The bug was discovered 04/14/2009. The weakness was published 04/15/2009 by Esteban Martinez Fayo (iDefense) with Application Security, Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0981 since 03/19/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Alexander Kornbrust in Python and been published 7 hours after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64708 (Oracle Application Express (Apex) CVE-2009-0981), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19463 (Oracle April 2009 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8052.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (64708) and Exploit-DB (8456). Similar entries are available at 3953, 3955, 47767 and 47766.
