Perl up to 2.1-5 DBD::Pg Module dbdimp.c dbd_st_prepare format string

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Perl (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects the function dbd_st_prepare of the file dbdimp.c of the component DBD::Pg Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-134. The product uses a function that accepts a format string as an argument, but the format string originates from an external source. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple format string vulnerabilities in dbdimp.c in DBD::Pg (aka DBD-Pg or libdbd-pg-perl) module before 2.19.0 for Perl allow remote PostgreSQL database servers to cause a denial of service (process crash) via format string specifiers in (1) a crafted database warning to the pg_warn function or (2) a crafted DBD statement to the dbd_st_prepare function.

The weakness was published 02/27/2012 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-1151 since 02/14/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74579 (openSUSE Security Update : perl-DBD-Pg (openSUSE-SU-2012:0422-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350635 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for perl-DBD-Pg: ALAS-2012-112).

Upgrading to version 2.17.1-2+squeeze1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73855), Tenable (74579), SecurityFocus (BID 52378†), OSVDB (79978†) and Secunia (SA48319†). Similar entries are available at VDB-4778 and VDB-4779. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
