Affected by this issue is the function nsAsyncInstantiateEvent::Run of the file xslt_attributeset_ImportSameName.html of the component Browser Engine. The browser engine in Mozilla Firefox 3.x before 3.0.9, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.22, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.16 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) and possibly trigger memory corruption via vectors related to (1) nsAsyncInstantiateEvent::Run, (2) nsStyleContext::Destroy, (3) nsComputedDOMStyle::GetWidth, (4) the xslt_attributeset_ImportSameName.html test case for the XSLT stylesheet compiler, (5) nsXULDocument::SynchronizeBroadcastListener, (6) IsBindingAncestor, (7) PL_DHashTableOperate and nsEditor::EndUpdateViewBatch, and (8) gfxSkipCharsIterator::SetOffsets, and other vectors.

The weakness was disclosed 04/22/2009 by Gregory Fleischer (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-1302 since 04/16/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. By approaching the search of inurl:xslt_attributeset_ImportSameName.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39493 (Mozilla Thunderbird < 2.0.0.22 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119091 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:0436)).

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50001) and Tenable (39493). The entries 46674, 48897, 48896 and 47862 are pretty similar.
