The JBIG2 decoder in Xpdf 3.02pl2 and earlier, CUPS 1.3.9 and earlier, Poppler before 0.10.6, and other products allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF file that triggers a free of invalid data.
The weakness was disclosed 04/23/2009 by Braden Thomas as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-1180 since 03/31/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38897 (CentOS 4 / 5 : cups (CESA-2009:0429)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165641 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update CUPS (SUSE-SA:2009:024)).
