. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the DBD::Pg (aka DBD-Pg or libdbd-pg-perl) module 1.49 for Perl might allow context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified input to an application that uses the getline and pg_getline functions to read database rows.
The bug was discovered 04/28/2009. The weakness was released 04/30/2009 with Debian (Website). The advisory is available at security.debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0663 since 02/22/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67857 (Oracle Linux 5 : perl-DBD-Pg (ELSA-2009-0479)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165632 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2009:012)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50467) and Tenable (67857). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 4779, 46941, 46940 and 46932.
