Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.1/5.5/6.0 HTTP Response memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.1/5.5/6.0 (Web Browser). Affected is some unknown processing of the component HTTP Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in URLMON.DLL in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an HTTP response containing long values in (1) Content-type and (2) Content-encoding fields.

The issue has been introduced in 11/08/1999. The weakness was presented 04/26/2003 by Jouko Pynnönen with Oy Online Solutions Ltd, Finland as MS03-015 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2003-0113 since 02/26/2003. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1265 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3461. In this case the pattern Content-Type is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2227.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (11846). See 3, 45 and 20416 for similar entries.
