IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Express up to 5.3.3.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Express up to 5.3.3.0 (Backup Software). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in the Web GUI in the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client 5.1.0.0 through 5.1.8.2, 5.2.0.0 through 5.2.5.3, 5.3.0.0 through 5.3.6.4, 5.4.0.0 through 5.4.2.6, and 5.5.0.0 through 5.5.1.17 allows attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.

The bug was discovered 04/05/2009. The weakness was shared 05/05/2009 by Dyon Balding with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at www-1.ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-1520 since 05/05/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/04/2019). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 30 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8720.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (50328). The entries 48051, 48050 and 48046 are related to this item.
