A vulnerability was found in IceWarp eMail Server up to 7.4.1 (Mail Server Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file webmail.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in the search form in server/webmail.php in the Groupware component in IceWarp eMail Server and WebMail Server before 9.4.2 allow remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the (1) sql and (2) order_by elements in an XML search query.

The bug was discovered 03/23/2009. The weakness was presented 05/05/2009 by RedTeam Pentesting with RedTeam Pentesting GmbH (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1468 since 04/28/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed in Shell File. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 43 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:webmail.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38717 (IceWarp Merak WebMail Server < 9.4.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading to version 7.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
