The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
racoon/isakmp_frag.c in ipsec-tools before 0.7.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via crafted fragmented packets without a payload, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference.
The bug was discovered 04/02/2009. The weakness was presented 05/06/2009 as Bug 497990 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-1574 since 05/06/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 34 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67859 (Oracle Linux 5 : ipsec-tools (ELSA-2009-1036)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155913 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for ipsec-tools (ELSA-2009-1036)).
Upgrading to version 0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
