Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.28 and 4.x through 10.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, Thunderbird before 3.1.20 and 5.0 through 10.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.8 do not properly restrict setting the home page through the dragging of a URL to the home button, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code with chrome privileges via a javascript: URL that is later interpreted in the about:sessionrestore context.

The weakness was shared 03/13/2012 by Mariusz Mlynski (Nils) as MFSA2012-16 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0458 since 01/09/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58344 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:0387)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
