Integer overflow in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2002 SP3 and 2003 SP3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PowerPoint file containing a crafted record type for "collaboration information for different slides" that contains a field that specifies a large number of records, which triggers an under-allocated buffer and a heap-based buffer overflow, aka "Integer Overflow Vulnerability."
The weakness was released 05/12/2009 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0221 since 01/20/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/11/2021).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38742 (MS09-017: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (967340)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110094 (Microsoft Office PowerPoint Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS09-017)).
