Linux Foundation Xen up to 3.3.1 hypervisor_callback resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 3.3.1 (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function hypervisor_callback. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The hypervisor_callback function in Xen, possibly before 3.4.0, as applied to the Linux kernel 2.6.30-rc4, 2.6.18, and probably other versions allows guest user applications to cause a denial of service (kernel oops) of the guest OS by triggering a segmentation fault in "certain address ranges."

The bug was discovered 05/13/2009. The weakness was presented 05/22/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-1758 since 05/21/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43757 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2009:1106)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165654 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2009:045)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50535) and Tenable (43757). See 46707, 44965, 49049 and 48416 for similar entries.
