The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the jclient._Java_novell_jclient_JClient_defineClass@20 function in jclient.dll in the Tomcat web server in Novell iManager 2.7, 2.7.3, and 2.7.3 FTF2 allow remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via the (1) EnteredClassID or (2) NewClassName parameter to nps/servlet/webacc.
The weakness was shared 03/13/2012 by Francisco Falcon with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is available at novell.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1929. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Core Security Technologies in Python and been published before and not just after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61709 (Novell eDirectory < 8.8 SP6 Patch 5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11849 (Novell iManager before 2.7.4/2.7.3 FTF4 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 8.8 SP6 Patch 5 (20606.01) eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10588.
