OpenCA up to 0.9.1.7 Certificate libCheckSignature improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in OpenCA up to 0.9.1.7. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function libCheckSignature in the library libCheckSignature of the component Certificate Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

The libCheckSignature function in crypto-utils.lib for OpenCA 0.9.1.6 and earlier only compares the serial of the signer s certificate and the one in the database, which can cause OpenCA to incorrectly accept a signature if the certificate s chain is trusted by OpenCA s chain directory, allowing remote attackers to spoof requests from other users.

The bug was discovered 01/16/2004. The weakness was shared 01/16/2004 by Alexandru Matei and Michael Bell with OpenCA Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openca.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14715 (OpenCA crypto-utils.lib libCheckSignature Function Signature Validation Weakness), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openca.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
