ModSecurity 2.1.7/2.5.5/2.5.6/2.5.7/2.5.8 null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in ModSecurity 2.1.7/2.5.5/2.5.6/2.5.7/2.5.8 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component ModSecurity. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The multipart processor in ModSecurity before 2.5.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a multipart form datapost request with a missing part header name, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference.

The bug was discovered 03/11/2009. The weakness was released 03/11/2009 by Steve Grubb (ERNE) (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1902 since 06/03/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67125 (ModSecurity < 2.5.9 Multipart Request Header Name DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Firewalls and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116306 (Fedora Update for mod_security (FEDORA-2009-2654,FEDORA-2009-2686)).

Upgrading to version 2.5.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49212), Tenable (67125) and Exploit-DB (8241). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at 48407.
