The bug was discovered 06/08/2009. The weakness was disclosed 06/08/2009 by Tavis Ormandy (Shadow) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-1712 since 05/20/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44815 (Debian DSA-1950-1 : webkit - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175067 (Debian Security Update for Qt4-x11 (DSA-1988)).
Upgrading to version 3.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
