A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 3.0.10 (Web Browser). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Proxy Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.11, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.22, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.17 use the HTTP Host header to determine the context of a document provided in a non-200 CONNECT response from a proxy server, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary web script by modifying this CONNECT response, aka an "SSL tampering" attack.
The bug was discovered 06/11/2009. The weakness was presented 06/12/2009 with Microsoft (Website). The advisory is shared at rhn.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1836 since 05/29/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43755 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1095)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116484 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1095-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6825.
