Drupal up to 6.12 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Drupal up to 6.12 (Content Management System). This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Drupal 6.x before 6.13 does not prevent users from modifying user signatures after the associated comment format has been changed to an administrator-controlled input format, which allows remote authenticated users to inject arbitrary web script, HTML, and possibly PHP code via a crafted user signature.

The weakness was disclosed 07/01/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at securitytracker.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-2372. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44795 (Debian DSA-1930-1 : drupal6 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175009 (Debian Security Update for Drupal6 (DSA-1930)).

Upgrading to version 6.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51502) and Tenable (44795). The entries 48919, 48918, 48916 and 48915 are pretty similar.
