The forgotten mail interface in WordPress and WordPress MU before 2.8.1 exhibits different behavior for a password request depending on whether the user account exists, which allows remote attackers to enumerate valid usernames. NOTE: the vendor reportedly disputes the significance of this issue, indicating that the behavior exists for "user convenience."

The weakness was published 07/08/2009 by CORE Security with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-2336 since 07/05/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592.004 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Core Security and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39856 (Fedora 11 : wordpress-2.8.1-1.fc11 (2009-7701)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12325 (WordPress Privileges Multiple Information Disclosure Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
