A vulnerability was found in PulseAudio 0.9.9/0.9.10/0.9.14. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in PulseAudio 0.9.9, 0.9.10, and 0.9.14 allows local users to gain privileges via vectors involving creation of a hard link, related to the application setting LD_BIND_NOW to 1, and then calling execv on the target of the /proc/self/exe symlink.
The weakness was disclosed 07/17/2009 by Julien Tinnes (Rick) as Bug 510071 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-1894 since 06/02/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy in Shell File and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39871 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : pulseaudio (MDVSA-2009:152)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51804), Tenable (39871) and Exploit-DB (15274). The entry 55958 is pretty similar.
