Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the wikitext parser in MediaWiki 1.17.x before 1.17.3 and 1.18.x before 1.18.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a crafted page with "forged strip item markers," as demonstrated using the CharInsert extension.

The weakness was published 03/22/2012 by Brion Vibber (Bawolff) as not defined mailinglist post (Website). The advisory is available at lists.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-1582 since 03/12/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation.
