NOS Microsystems getPlus Download Manager, as used in Adobe Reader and possibly other versions, Corel getPlus Download Manager before, and possibly other products, installs NOS\bin\getPlus_HelperSvc.exe with insecure permissions (Everyone:Full Control), which allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges by replacing getPlus_HelperSvc.exe with a Trojan horse program, as demonstrated by use of getPlus Download Manager within Adobe Reader. NOTE: within Adobe Reader, the scope of this issue is limited because the program is deleted and the associated service is not automatically launched after a successful installation and reboot.

No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42120 (Adobe Reader < 9.2 / 8.1.7 / 7.1.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB09-15)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116635 (Adobe Reader and Acrobat Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (APSB09-15)).

Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
