The browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12 and Thunderbird allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to (1) the frame chain and synchronous events, (2) a SetMayHaveFrame assertion and nsCSSFrameConstructor::CreateFloatingLetterFrame, (3) nsCSSFrameConstructor::ConstructFrame, (4) the child list and initial reflow, (5) GetLastSpecialSibling, (6) nsFrameManager::GetPrimaryFrameFor and MathML, (7) nsFrame::GetBoxAscent, (8) nsCSSFrameConstructor::AdjustParentFrame, (9) nsDOMOfflineResourceList, and (10) nsContentUtils::ComparePosition.
The weakness was released 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-2462 since 07/15/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67894 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : seamonkey (ELSA-2009-1163)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116530 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1162-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.0.19 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.
