The nsXULTemplateQueryProcessorRDF::CheckIsSeparator function in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12, SeaMonkey 2.0a1pre, and Thunderbird allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to loading multiple RDF files in a XUL tree element.

The weakness was presented 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2464 since 07/15/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43769 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1162)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116528 (Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2009-34, MFSA 2009-35, MFSA 2009-36, MFSA 2009-37, MFSA 2009-39, MFSA 2009-40)).

Upgrading to version 2.0.0.19 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.
