Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12 does not properly handle an SVG element that has a property with a watch function and an __defineSetter__ function, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted document, related to a certain pointer misinterpretation.
The weakness was presented 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2469 since 07/15/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43769 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1162)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116528 (Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2009-34, MFSA 2009-35, MFSA 2009-36, MFSA 2009-37, MFSA 2009-39, MFSA 2009-40)).
Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.
