Mozilla Firefox prior 1.0 Same Origin Policy cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Same Origin Policy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. CVE summarizes:

Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12 does not always use XPCCrossOriginWrapper when required during object construction, which allows remote attackers to bypass the Same Origin Policy and conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via a crafted document, related to a "cross origin wrapper bypass."

The weakness was published 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2472 since 07/15/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43769 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1162)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116528 (Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2009-34, MFSA 2009-35, MFSA 2009-36, MFSA 2009-37, MFSA 2009-39, MFSA 2009-40)).

Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51908), Tenable (43769), SecurityFocus (BID 35758†), Secunia (SA35914†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-22954†). Similar entries are available at VDB-48108, VDB-49258, VDB-49119 and VDB-49118. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
