The TAR file parser in Quick Heal (aka Cat QuickHeal) 11.00, Command Antivirus 18.104.22.168, F-Prot Antivirus 22.214.171.124, Fortinet Antivirus 126.96.36.199, K7 AntiVirus 9.77.3565, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 188.8.131.52, Antimalware Engine 1.1.6402.0 in Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0, NOD32 Antivirus 5795, Norman Antivirus 6.06.12, Panda Antivirus 10.0.2.7, and Rising Antivirus 22.83.00.03 allows remote attackers to bypass malware detection via a POSIX TAR file with an initial \7fELF character sequence. NOTE: this may later be SPLIT into multiple CVEs if additional information is published showing that the error occurred independently in different TAR parser implementations.
The weakness was disclosed 03/19/2012 by Suman Jana and Vitaly Shmatikov as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Norman. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1420 since 02/29/2012. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Suman Jana / Vitaly Shmatikov and been published immediately after the advisory. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
