Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.13, and 3.5.x before 3.5.2, allows remote attackers to spoof the address bar, and possibly conduct phishing attacks, via a crafted web page that calls window.open with an invalid character in the URL, makes document.write calls to the resulting object, and then calls the stop method during the loading of the error page.

The weakness was released 08/03/2009 by Juan Pablo Lopez Yacubian (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-2654 since 08/03/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40648 (openSUSE Security Update : MozillaFirefox (MozillaFirefox-1202)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119088 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1430)).

Upgrading to version 2.0 8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
