libgnutls in GnuTLS before 2.8.2 does not properly handle a \0 character in a domain name in the subject s (1) Common Name (CN) or (2) Subject Alternative Name (SAN) field of an X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority.
The weakness was presented 08/12/2009 by Tomas Hoger (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2730. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67916 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 : gnutls (ELSA-2009-1232)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165156 (SUSE Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:004)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.17 eliminates this vulnerability.
