cURL/libcURL up to 7.10.8 OpenSSL Module lib/ssluse.c cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in cURL and libcURL up to 7.10.8 (Network Utility Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part in the library lib/ssluse.c of the component OpenSSL Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

lib/ssluse.c in cURL and libcurl 7.4 through 7.19.5, when OpenSSL is used, does not properly handle a \0 character in a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, a related issue to CVE-2009-2408.

The weakness was published 08/14/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2417 since 07/09/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1600 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67910 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : curl (ELSA-2009-1209)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117331 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2010-002 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2010-03-29-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52405) and Tenable (67910). Similar entries are available at 48189, 52475, 52443 and 52442.
